Unlocking the Severn
£22 million river restoration and infrastructure programme
A landmark, multi-year partnership between the Canal & River Trust, Environment Agency, Severn Rivers Trust, and Natural England — funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and EU LIFE programme. The project aimed to restore 158 miles of the River Severn for shad migration by installing fish passes at several key barriers and engaging communities with river heritage and ecology.
My Role: Programme Leadership & Delivery Oversight
As the programme lead for capital works and community engagement I was responsible for the overall coordination, governance, and delivery of the fish pass infrastructure across four major sites. This involved:
-
Leading on programme-wide governance and reporting, ensuring accountability to funders and strategic partners
-
Managing relationships with key stakeholders, including the Environment Agency, local authorities, designers, contractors, and environmental specialists
-
Driving risk management, scope control, and cost assurance across the capital programme
-
Facilitating technical decision-making under time pressure and environmental constraints
-
Ensuring safe, coordinated delivery alongside ecological monitoring and public engagement activity
